Deep, deep, very deep, below the surface of the sparkling blue Mediterranean Sea, so deep down that the sun never shown and the water flowed red, sat a King named Holorious, a man drowning into the last stage of his life. The stage when all men loose their hostility and begin to reflect their past lives with remorse. Now, with a crown on his head, Holorious jumped out of his throne and proclaimed to the overflowing crowd, “War isn’t the answer _ us, it never has been. As long as I can breathe through my gills, there will be no more sacrifices, no more of our sons will die!” As soon as King Holorious finished his proclamation all of those gathered in attendance roared, and began chanting, “Long live our kingdom! Long live our kingdom!” The King slowly sat down on his golden chair, and spoke again, “During the cruel, harrowing war against the kingdom Quasish over one million of our heroic trident warriors have sacrificed their lives _ us, to protect us! They’ve fought intrepidly, dying _ Balazar. But this must end. It is time to use our tongues, not our tridents. We will make peace with all species.” The King then stood on his throne, slammed his scepter upon the stage and boisterously announced, “I hereby proclaim that from this very moment, if anyone speaks, conspires, or even thinks of war they will be _ced onto land, to suffer and die!” Later that evening, Prince Golithus, son of Holorious, heir to the throne of Balazar, swam circularly around his chamber nervously. Orionthus, Balazar's Chief of Defenses, and Golithus' most trusted friend, tried to calm him with his presence. "My father doesn't understand," said the prince. "We can't wait any longer. We must make a strike against the humans. Our entire civilization is in jeopardy. They've already conquered Coliophus, and Zuthus! What will they take next? When will it stop?" "It won't," said Orionthus. "They will continue to encroach upon our kingdom until it is theirs." The prince stroke his fist on the table, swept everything off and overturned it. With his teeth barred like a hungry animal, he snarled, "I won't let it happen. I won't sit here and wait _ them to destroy us!" "What do you propose?" "Kill him!" "Who?" "My father." "Golithus," Orionthus placed his hands on the prince's gill, "think about what you're saying." "I have, and this is the only solution I have. I've tried talking to him but he won't listen. He says war is not the answer, but it is. To attack is the only way to stop them. We must kill them be_e they kill us!" "Yes, but he is your father!” "Tell me Orionthus, is it not better to kill one man to save many others?” "I agree, but..." "But what?" "He's the king, he is your father." "There is no father in war. There is only blood, suffering, and death." Their debate lasted long into the night, until the moon reached its peak, and the deep water became its darkest, and finally it was decided that the Prince would go ahead with it. "Tomorrow," he said, "during the feast, I will do it." "I wish there is another way." "But, there isn't," he snapped. "This must be done." And so it was done, exactly as they had planned during the feast, _ the king sat upon his throne sipping from his jeweled chalice, Orionthus arranged _ a concubine to distract him with an attractive dance, and as he set his cup down upon the massive table to applaud her per_mance, his son, Prince Golithus poured poison into his father's chalice. Then, as the festivities wound down, Golithus arose from his chair and made a speech to the kingdom of Balazar, “My father, he has served us all with courage, bravery, and hostility. Not one of us can deny his legacy and wisdom.” Golithus then turned to his father, picked up his cup, clinked against his father’s chalice, and ended his father’s eulogy with these words, “Long live the king!” The king, with a proud smile on his face, raised his chalice up to his lips, and took his last drink. |
